Ajai Chowdhry is a founder of HCL. He was responsible for the significant international growth of HCL Infosystems Ltd. Ajai played an instrumental role in the international expansion of HCL in South East Asian markets including Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong, Indonesia, People's Republic of China and Singapore. He was also part of the IT Task Force set up by the Prime Minister of India, to give shape to India's IT strategy. Ajai was awarded the Padma Bhushan as recognition of his consistent contribution in the field of IT. He was also conferred the Honoris Causa Doctorate of Science by IIT Roorkee, one of India's most prestigious technology institutes.

While a salesman selling calculators for DCM Data Products, Ajai has many a times hitchhiked his way back from the Maharashtra sugar belt to Mumbai on a truck.
